have 3gb ram and am looking to upgrade it to the max of 4. do i order 4gn
b and replace the whole lot or do i order 1gb to make up the difference?

make sure you have an 64bit operating system. otherwise you can only access 3.25GB, which would make the upgrade not really worth it.
your gonna need to open up the laptop and see what you have for memory either 3 1GB sticks or a 2GB and a 1GB. there is normally a easy to remove compartment on the bottom of the laptop for memory. check your manual.
you also need the same type of memory. so your manual again will help, you need to know if its ddr, ddr2, ddr3 and its speed which will be a 4-5 digit number.
eg. ddr3 1066, ddr3 pc3 10600. it could also have both types of number for example ddr3 1333 (pc3 10600).
if you cant find in the manual any of these numbers the actual memory sticks should have them. rarely do they not. but if not you can type the model number into google and find out.
