I have my first computer to build in the mail to be coming this week. I am comfortable with putting most of it together, however, I have never installed a CPU. I'm realizing I will get the thermal paste/heat sink and not know what to do or how to do it the right way. Are there any tips anyone has for me on getting the CPU and cooling elements installed properly.

AMD Phenom II X4 955: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808

that is the CPU I purchased if its relevant.
Thank you for any advice

AMD CPUs have a small triangle notch on one corner of the CPU and a corresponding one on the motherboard's CPU socket. Follow the motherboard's instructions on how to secure it (Intel and AMD have different levers), and you'll be good in terms of installation.

The heatsink part is easier than people think. You apply an even THIN layer on both the CPU and the Cooler. Don't go all the way to the edges because it could ooze onto the circuits and you could blow the board. In terms of putting the cooler on, follow the instructions it comes with.
