Terrible Fan noise

I have an ATI Radeon HD 4800 (msi i think). The fan just sounds awful. All the time but definitely worse when under heavy load. I've taken it apart and reassembled it, but the fan didn't look stock. Is there an easy way to replace the fan or do I just need a new GPU.

In the immediate future, can I unplug the fan and leave my case open?

You will need that fan, if not the GPUs gonna fry.

What sound does it make? It it a buzz/whine or its just loud.

Buzzing/whining. Not grinding (yet) but sounds close.

I would say get an RMA if you can, but check if its touching any wires first.

Its highly likely to be a dying bearing, sometimes lubing the inside of the fan can do the trick.

I'm very disappointed it lasted barely a year.

I'm considering a Radeon HD 5750 replacement. Whats a quality vendor who's fan won't crap out?

Hmm..4890.. Does you case have bad airflow?
A HD5750 would be a step down from it thou, a HD5830/GTX460 is the appropriate replacement.

However, I would rather get an aftermarket cooler like this: (http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=FAN-TURPRO&c=fr&pid=8c45acaeaf56e0c0ff500d3574b16e6a7dc7e29de1726a47b2ba7175b657a4c0)as the 4890 is still a strong card. you can use it for later cards also and it will cool the cards

Yup, the HD5750 performs a bit better than the 4850.
