Ps3 external hard drive useless??

Hello,
hello i was wondering if there was a way to run my ps3 off of an external hard drive so that i simply have more space because i have finally figured out how to format it to a fat32 file type but now when i go to copy my movies i bought on the playstation store it will only let me back them up and seeing as the hd movies take up most of the space on my ps3 (the harry potter series alone takes up around a good 30-40 gb;s) it is rather useless to have an external hard drive unless i can somehow make it completely run off of it. any suggestions?

Well the external hard drive can only act like a USB device unless you mod the ps3. But if you back the movies up on the external HD, cant you delete the ones on your ps3?
