Are the Pentium 4 HT and Pentium D [Dual Core] interchangeable--is one or the other an upgrade to the other? Do they both fit in a Socket 775?

The P4 is a different microarchitecture than the dual core. It will fit in the socket, but the BIOS may have a hard time trying to identify the CPU.

It will likely not even fit the socket as Pentium 4 HT was usually used to identify socket 478 chips. Later socket 775 Pentium 4s were usually called by their number....P4 530 or P4 640 ect. although they technically were Pentium 4s with HT ( hyper threading ). The Pentium D is LGA ( socket) 775 for sure.
