Hello everyone, so i built a new computer 3 week ago. So when ever i play either SC2 or WoW 5-20 min later my screen turns black but i can still here the game sound in my headphone. I know the computer didnt restart or anything. I have updated my driver to 10.8 and stock setting on my xfx HD 5850 card. Can anyone tell me whats wrong or should i RMA back to xfx or newegg and see if that helps.
-Thank you-

See if it works with older drivers, try 10.4 they seem to be the most stable for people.

I've got the exact same issue as you with the XFX 5850.

My specs are

i7 950
Corsair 6gig ram @ 1600hz
Asus P6X58D-E Mobo
Corsair HX-750 PSU
G.Skill Pheonix pro ssd
Samsung 1tb f3
Win 7 Pro 64bit

It seems a lot of people have been having these issues, particularly with Sapphire/XFX 5800 series. I've attempted many things like different drivers, making sure mobo drivers are up to date, nothing seems to work..

I've also tried installing XP and the same thing happens.

If you find a fix let me know cause otherwise I'm gonna RMA it also :(

I've had a similar experience with my former XFX HD5870 card. Instead of a black screen, I got a gray striped screen instead. Never found a solution, so I RMA'ed it.

Wasn't there a "hot fix" for this a while back ? Check AMD's site.

I have an ATI Raedon HD 5850, and it's crashing not on games, but on videos, such as Xfire or YouTube. It even crashed on iTunes while I was listening to music! It keeps repeating the same sound over and over again, and it turns into a screen of one color. I've seen it either light gray, or green so far.

I think there are several threads about this on these forums, if you do a search for GSOD 5xxx.

Not sure if it is against forum policies to link to another tech forum, but found this on overclockers: http://www.overclock.net/ati/650900-gray-screen-explain...

Might answer some of your questions.
