AMD Gaming Build

Hey everybody,

I'm looking for some critique on this gaming build I have planned. I would like to keep it close to what the total is now, and less would be great. The only thing that I have is a heat sink - cooler master hyper 212. Here's what I have in my cart, and a couple of these are combo deals.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto 3.2GHz - $88.99

Mobo: ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 - $114.99

RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) - $74.99

Graphics: MSI N460GTX Cyclone 768D5/OC GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 768MB - $164.99

HD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s - $54.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073

Case: Cooler Master Storm Scout - $79.99

PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W ATX12V V2.2 - $74.99

DVD Drive: LG 22X DVD Burner - $16.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.524161

Total: $633.92 (before s/h & rebates)

Please give me any opinions and suggestions you may have.
Thanks, Mike

Thanks for the suggestion, is this what you're talking about?

  3. I was also wondering if there is a better psu for the same price or cheaper.
  4. you want to get a 3x or 4x instead of a 2x.

For the same price you can get an Athlon II X3 450 ($84.99)

or the Athlon II x4 640 for about $10 more

Either which will outperform the Phenom II X2 555.

A recent Tom's article pointed out that in 20 popular games, an average of 2.75 cores was in use, don't go 2 core
  5. reason he went the Phenom II X2 555 is its easy to unlock 1-2 more cores but its not guarnteed.....

and yes thats the GPU im talking about

Yeah, I hope I get lucky, and can unlock 2 more cores. And thanks for the suggestion I think I'll get that gpu. I just liked the the aesthetics of the cyclone(kinda dumb reason).

That thing is a beast, but I don't have the money. Do u think that the ocz psu is alright? I've not heard many good things about ocz products, but this is in the budget, and it's modular.
  9. its a good PSU for what its worth is it 80+ certified?
  10. Yeah, its 80+ certified, or should I get this,
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.514454
cause then I can get a western digital black HD 640(which are supposed to be newer), I also read that 500w is enough for any system with 1 graphics card.
  11. mike: you MIGHT get extra cores (only about 50% unlock any, and most of those that do, only get 1 extra) might as well go for the guaranteed 3/4 cores.

You can also get the Phenom II X3 740BE for the same 88.99, but it will need a separate cooler, a Kingwin XT-1264 runs about $25 and a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ runs about $30, both of which will allow great overclocks.
  12. thats a pretty good HDD+PSU combo
  13. I'd go for the sapphire because it exausts heat OUTSIDE the case instead of into the case
  14. Thanks, I think I'll get the sapphire.
Where can I find info on the airflow of the card?
