Please help me understand my upgrade question

i have a compaq cq5300y. i want to get the best processor i can and im not quite sure what i can get. im computer smart but the specs dont make sense to me i found a AMD Phenom X4 9650 Quad Core Processor agena core 95 wats but its only 2.3 ghs. i found deneb core processor phenom II X4 2.80 GHz AM3 95 wat witch i like the speed way better than the other one. so could someone please tell me if that would work or not thanks

Can't be sure, but there's an excellent chance it will, since the standard cpu for your board is the sempron 140 am3. Oem boards may not offer a bios upgrade for the newer cpu. The new cpu may post as "unknown cpu" but still run. Then you can use cpuz to see what speed the cpu is running at. "Cool and quiet" AMD's energy saving software may still lower the speed at idle, unless your motherboard bios has a setting to disable it.

According to them you can get the Phenom II X4 925 or an Athlon II X4 635/640/645.
