Here's my current system build:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black (no O.C.)
ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 - AMD 890GX/SB850
2x 2GB G-Skill DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666)
Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB PCI-e 2.0
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 4
Windows 7 Professional x64
Catalyst 10.8

I've followed the instructions in the mobo book, but Catalyst shows the 4290 as a 'Disabled Adapter' and doesn't give me access to the CrossFireX portion of the Control Center. I can't find anywhere to enable it, so I'm not sure what to do. Can anyone help me out with this?

Solution
You cannot enable hybrid crossfire with any of the 4xxx or 5xxx series cards, they are simply to powerful for the lowly IGP to make any difference, the strongest card AMD officially supports hybrid crossfireX with is the 3470, see the bottom part of the chart

Thanks for the answer! I wasn't sure if that chart was still trustworthy since it doesn't even show the 890GX chipset on there, and it doesn't look like there is an updated chart at all. It's ok though, means I don't have to waste the onboard RAM for the IGP, I can just completely disable it in the BIOS.
