Saving to win7 pc from vista

So, I have a win7 pro pc with a 1TB hard drive. Needless to say, I don't need all that space. I created a 500GB partition for general data storage, and I would like to be able to save to that from another vista-based laptop. They are both operating wirelessly on the same LAN. I have tried accessing the win7 pc from the vista laptop, but all I am able to acess is the public documents.
I know it's probably really simple, but I have no experience in this area and any help would be appreciated. Is there any more information I should give?>

Roughly as follows -(I'm not using Vista or Win7 but the principles are the same):

First turn off firewalls on both machines temporarily.
Enable file sharing on the relevant folders.
Run the Networking Wizard or go to Add a New Network Place.

Personally I would set it up with the machines linked by wire rather than wireless.
