Gateway GT5670 upgrade

I own a Gateway GT5670 computer. It came with an AMD Phenom X3 8400 CPU. This CPU is an AM2+ 95W CPU. The motherboard specs for this computer say it's an AM2 socket 89W max. Can I use a newer AM3 95W CPU in this motherboard?

MB is ECS MCP61PM-GM AM2 mATX Motherboard

  1. No as it states "Supports AMD® AM2 Socket K8 Athlon™ 64 X2, Athlon™ 64, Athlon™ FX, and Sempron™ processors under 89 watt power consumption" see http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006254R/4006254Rsp2.shtml
  2. I understand that, but it came with a CPU that already exceeded those specs. It came with a Phenom X3 8400, which is a socket AM2+ 95W CPU, so I'm guessing that the MB can handle more than what is stated.
  3. Unlikely as its AM2 not AM2+, most AM2+ boards can take AM3 CPUs but I don't think any AM2 can. I could be wrong and maybe I shouldn't have bothered posting but unless someone can tell you otherwise I would not risk it.
