I just installed a ati hd4850. My screen will intermitenly go black "only" when I find myself watching videos on youtube, or other media sites. It does not occur when the drivers are removed. I have not had it happen when gaming, or while I am typing this issue. It only happens during web videos regaurdless of the quality of the video. Any idea's?

Well, first of all, tell us your FULL specs here...
Also you can try different drivers like 10.3 or 10.4, that's the most stable driver for now.

Well my specs shouldn't matter because I found some other stuff. The drivers that are installed via windows update ver 8.632.1.2000 (after deleting the device and driver from device manager) allow me to watch video on youtube and haven't shut off since. However, when I try and use a benchmark app like MSI Kombustor and/or Ozone3d Furerendering benchmark, neither one of them run. In fact the Ozone fur benchmark service failes. Now if I goto ati and install the most current drivers, then the benchmark apps work but I run into the losing video error. I'm not a noob but I am not all knowing either, so can you tell me why specs would play a part with the information I have updated in this post? Thanks. I am running windows 7, AMD Athlon 64 6000+ dual, Biostar A770 A2+, and 2gb 333hz ddr, with 2 200gb hard drives sata. So nothing fantastic.

Also having the 10.9 drivers installed is what causes me to goto black screen when watching any kind of web video.

PSU? brand? model?
September 17, 2010 4:06:19 AM

PSU isn't great either: WT480 max output 480w. I'm a noob when it comes to power supplys. Thanks for your time on this. Anything else I'm missing?

What about the amperage on each rails (PSU)?
A "crap" 450W PSU can't handle HD4850 normally...

Well, already tried 10.3 or 10.4? If not then try it on...

Ok, now the noob in me comes out. How in the world do I figure out the amperage on the rails. Where do I find that when looking at my psu and what in the world is a rail? I am sooo sorry. Can you give me an example?

Take a look at your PSU, there's must be a sticker like this one:

You can see columns DC output: +3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 +12V3 +12V4 -12V +5Vsb.
That's we called "rails", each of them has each own amperage (max output current).
September 17, 2010 1:57:31 PM

Output: +3.3v +5v +12v -12v -15 +5vsb
Max(A) : 28A 36A 16A 0.8A 0.5A 2A

Does this help?

Yes, that's a very helpful, well, get a better PSU, your current PSU is just too weak to run HD4850...
Also, have you tried driver version 10.3 or 10.4? try it first...
And make sure the 6 pin power connector is properly attached.

First of all thanks for the time and response you have put into this. I learned something. Second of all, I had a feeling the PSU would be cheap even though it was a 480w. Can you tell me why you would get a different PSU based on the specs I provided you? Again, thanks!!

You only has 16A on 12V rail, the minimum is 24A to run a whole system with HD4850 on it...
A quality(a.k.a good) brands 500W PSU usually has 36A minimum on 12V rail. :)

I tried driver version 10.3 and 4 but when I use either of my aformentioned benchmark utilities I get the error: OpenGL: version 2.0 or higher required (current version detected:1.1).

Okey Dokey, then I'm over to new egg for a better PSU. I'll let you know if I run into the same issue in a week or so. Again, thanks!!!
