Advice needed. I can see my external drive and my files.
I can access for a few minutes I can copy amount of data at a time to my computer then everything freezes up.

Is there a more effective, faster way to this. I fear that it will die by the time I'm done copying 60 gig of music and pictures and other.

Have you check your drive by using Windows Error-checking tool?
The damaged drive always can make the computer freeze sometimes. Or, perhaps, the 60gig of data is too heavy for your computer to transfer. You can try to transfer it in several times.
I hope my words can help you.

i think the most effective and fastest way is using data recovery software. but you got 60G files, you gotta pay. most of the data recovery are just free for 1GB data. MiniTool power data recovery can be reliable cause i have used it for years.
