Are you using the latest version of that utility?

What is the brand and model of the motherboard and power supply unit?

If those #'s are right then you're power supply needs to be replaced.

Will a psu that isn't putting out required voltages hurt anything? No. Other than the comp. shutting down and losing unsaved work you have nothing else to worry about.

There are tolerances:

Voltage Rail Tolerance Minimum Voltage Maximum Voltage
+3.3VDC ± 5% +3.135 VDC +3.465 VDC
+5VDC ± 5% +4.750 VDC +5.250 VDC
+5VSB ± 5% +4.750 VDC +5.250 VDC
-5VDC (if used) ± 10% -4.500 VDC -5.500 VDC
+12VDC ± 5% +11.400 VDC +12.600 VDC
-12VDC ± 10% -10.800 VDC - 13.200 VDC

Well I know this, I wouldn't trust the voltages shown by CPUID Hardware Monitor or CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro.

Their tool is not up to date or they don't have a clue how to read the voltages from the sensor chip(s) properly. This is a very well known problem with this tool and recent motherboards or proprietary motherboards.

Look at their official forum and you'll see you're not alone:

Very true... I've always wondered what the hell vin5 and 6 is and never have gotten a definative answer. Nonetheless, typically wise to check voltages in bios and compare those voltages to software readings, HW Monitor, PC Wizard, Aida 64, Speccy, etc and give and take and come to ones own conclusion as to what's really going on... On the flip side one could spend around $10 at the local Wal-Mart and get a multi-meter.... We live in a lazy society so who wants to do this? (I'm being facetious)

I have a 1 Year Premium Hardware Service, would this cover it? Also, would you recommend buying a multi-meter?

Check the link-

Yes a multi-meter is a good idea... it won't lie to you and you can use it for other electrical devices in your home. If you're not comfortable with a MM you could get a "beginner-proof" PSU tester (no offense) from the link I provided. Your choice... but if you've checked Bios and different software as to the readings it isn't going to change the fact you need a different psu.

If you have a warrantee I would suggest calling the manufacturer up and bitching them out. What kind of machine is it? I had a Lenovo K320 last year for a HTPC in my living room and you better believe I used the crap out of the 1 year warrantee! They even came to my home!

It's an XPS 8300, only two months old. We have a multi-meter at home, but I have no idea how to test the psu, any guides?
Btw, gratz on your 1337th point.

Check Dell's support site for your XPS 8300 system and see if they have a BIOS update. I doubt that there is one available.

On Dell's own support forums someone else already brought up this exact same problem to Dell's attention. This was Dell's response:

From: Chris M, Dell Liason on March 31, 2011

Re: XPS 8300 Hardware Monitor Voltages

The updated motherboards are being misread by all of those 3rd party software. We will release a new bios to take care of this. No ETA.

Here's a little guide, just something I quickly looked up but it explains it easily enough. Just concentrate on the 3.3v, 5v & 12v readings. Remember these voltages have an ATX tolerance of +/- 5%. (note the tolerance graph above).

Good luck!

by the way thanks, I didn't even know what you were talking about lol. I had to think about that for a minute! and oh, Dell have some crazy proprietary power supplies too.

Checked, I'm using the latest BIOS update.
Also, the link. It's dated back in march, do you think it would have been fixed by now?

I highly doubt it's been fixed. I don't think Dell considers this type of a problem a high priority and will get to it when they can.
