M4a89gtd pro crashed with video card in pci-e slot

Hello,

I recently bought this motherboard along with AMD Phenom X6 1090T processor, 16 GB Corsair RAM matched for the board. In the PCI-E slot (Blue) I put a Nvidia GT 430 1GB card. It works ok till I go into a game like Battlefield and then after a few minutes crashed to a black screen causing a hard reset. It works if I use the on board graphics capability. Do I need to disable the onboard first in the Bios?

Thanks!

Disabled it and crash still occurred..any ideas? Should I go with an ATI card since it's a Crossfire MB?

Do you have the VGA switch card installed in PCIe 2.0 x16_1 slot (gray)?

Is the AMI BIOS SETUP UTILITY --> Advanced menu --> Chipset menu --> 890GX Chipset Configuration menu --> Primary Video Controller option set to [GFX0-GPP-IGFX-PCI]?

Yeah...I immediately thought "PSU!" too. I'm curious to hear whether the bios default graphics source can cause that kind of crash.

OP--Have you reinstalled updated drivers? Drivers can cause hard reset crashes. Does it crash in all games, or just Battlefield (BF3?)? All this stuff being brand new makes me think it could be driver issues. Also, double check that bios CPU & Memory settings are at defaults--not some unstable OC. Sometimes mobos aren't set to default out of the box and run the wrong speeds.

Yes I have the card in that slot, but no it is not set to GFX0-GPP-IGFX-PCI. The MB manual doesn't explain what these settings mean...
When I use the onboard GPU it doesn't crash. The GT430 doesnt require an power connection other than the pci-e slot. I will set the bios to that default and then post the results. Thanks very much for the responses! Not much on the Asus forums :(

Still crashed. The games launches fine, play a few minutes, black screen. Here is my DxDiag info. Could it be a bad power supply? It's weird it plays when internal graphics enabled..

Also does the setting in the bios under "AI Tweaker-GFX Overclocking-Internal Graphics mode:D isabled" the place to disable the on board graphics chip? I can't find another option in the Bios for the chip.

It crashed on any game, Battlefield 2, DDO, WoW. I updated all the drivers/bios when this first happened. It also just crashed for the first time by just trying to reply to your post!! Bios is set to normal, haven't tried to OC since this problem was occurring.
"Who Crashed?" gave me this below

Crash dump directory: C:\Windows\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

On Mon 10/3/2011 11:57:49 PM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\100311-22152-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: hdaudbus.sys (HDAudBus+0xFB4F)
Bugcheck code: 0x1000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC000001D, 0xFFFFF88004170B4F, 0xFFFFF880053E96E8, 0xFFFFF880053E8F40)
Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\hdaudbus.sys
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: High Definition Audio Bus Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that a system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

On Mon 10/3/2011 11:57:49 PM GMT your computer crashed

This was probably caused by the following module: rtkvhd64.sys (RTKVHD64+0xF763E)

description: Realtek(r) High Definition Audio Function Driver
Bug check description: This bug check indicates that a system thread generated an exception that the error handler did not catch.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: rtkvhd64.sys (Realtek(r) High Definition Audio Function Driver, Realtek Semiconductor Corp.).
Google query: rtkvhd64.sys Realtek Semiconductor Corp. SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

On Mon 10/3/2011 11:22:05 PM GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\100311-19780-01.dmp

Error: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This indicates that a severe memory management error occurred.
This might be a case of memory corruption. More often memory corruption happens because of software errors in buggy drivers, not because of faulty RAM modules.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver which cannot be identified at this time.

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

rtkvhd64.sys (Realtek(r) High Definition Audio Function Driver, Realtek Semiconductor Corp.)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination the errors that have been reported for these drivers and include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions from users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Have you uninstalled your Realtek High Definition Audio Codec?

Have you downloaded and installed the latest R.2.65 driver from Realtek's download site?

Have you checked the system events log to determine if it may be some other device or driver causing the crashes?

Yes I did that still crashed. Tried running 3DMark11 and it crashed. But it is stable using integrated GPU. I am going to RMA the GT430 and try another card.
