Building a new pc and am looking at 6870 crossfire and am wondering what motherboard and cpu would complement this. Most motherboards seem to be 1x16 pcie and 1x4pcie or 2x8 pcie. Is 2x16 a good idea and what would be a good board to build on. Oh and I will only have 1 gpu to start with i don't have that much money :p . I want to play games such as crysis 1&2 and metro at 1080 with max settings :)
Thanks in advance.

Better wait a couple of weeks for the new HD 6950/6970.

games such as metro 2033 and crysis are very very gpu bound and thus at high with just one card to start you might not get the performance you are looking for but when you get your second 6870 expect great performance the difference between x8/x8 and x16/x16 is about 2-3%

the asrock 870 extreme is an excellent board speaking from experience with it
highly recommend

I recommend the sabertooth x58. You can run your crossfire at 16x/16x and if you eventually wanted to run a third you would be able to at 16x/16x/8x. it also comes with USB3.0 and SATA 6GB/s.

Mine is combined with the i7 950 which is running nice and smooth playing Empire Total War with nearly max settings. What is your budget?

hmmmm well the 6870 is only dual crossfire. Anyway more than 2 gpu's can have scaling issues. I have heard the crossfire performance will outdo 5870 crossfire :)  Cant find the Asrock 870 Extreme in New Zealand :p  do you know if newegg would ship to small insignificant NZ?

the difference between x8/x8 n x16/x16 is only about 2-3fps not gonna kill you not worth 160 over the asrock 870 extreme3
