I'm looking to build my own gaming system. I've done builds in the past, but I'm a bit of a beginner. I'm not really confident that I've picked the right mix of reliability, performance and value. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I would like the new system to last a good stretch of time. I will be using it for first person shooter gaming as well as for applications like Adobe Illustrator. I have a 21" Dell flat panel monitor set at 1680 x 1050. I would like to start with one Radeon 5870 and then as an upgrade path add a second one in the future.

processor: $189.99 Intel Core i7 -950 3.06 GHz

graphics: $339.99 (after rebate) XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 1GB

memory: $145.99 Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)

hard drive 2: $79.99 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB

sound card: $54.99 Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1

case: $69.99 Antec Three Hundred Illusion

Total price: $1450.91

I'm over my target of about $1300. Do you see anything that is overkill or could probably replaced with something cheaper?

Thanks in advance!

If your using an i7 950 (lga 1336.) you want to buy a triple channel kit (3 stick of ram) to enable triple channel memory and not single.
and also, you don't need a soundcard, onboard audio has gotten so good recently. If you decide you don't like the audio get a card later.
and read my signature.
AND I only use Corsair,XFX, Antec, and Seasonic for PSU's :D

Thank you both. Really good feedback. I had no idea about the memory. I'll make sure I do some research.
