Gaming system - price performance balance

I'm looking to build my own gaming system. I've done builds in the past, but I'm a bit of a beginner. I'm not really confident that I've picked the right mix of reliability, performance and value. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I would like the new system to last a good stretch of time. I will be using it for first person shooter gaming as well as for applications like Adobe Illustrator. I have a 21" Dell flat panel monitor set at 1680 x 1050. I would like to start with one Radeon 5870 and then as an upgrade path add a second one in the future.

processor: $189.99 Intel Core i7 -950 3.06 GHz

motherboard: $209.99 Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 X58

graphics: $339.99 (after rebate) XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 1GB

memory: $145.99 Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)

power supply: $149.99 SILVERSTONE OP1000-E 1000W ATX 12V 2.2 & EPS 12V

hard drive 1: $179.99 Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000HLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

hard drive 2: $79.99 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB

sound card: $54.99 Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1

case: $69.99 Antec Three Hundred Illusion

Total price: $1450.91

I'm over my target of about $1300. Do you see anything that is overkill or could probably replaced with something cheaper?

Thanks in advance!

More about gaming system price performance balance
  1. yes the 5870 to the 6870 will be about 100$ cheaper
    also 2 6870 beat 2 5870

  2. If your using an i7 950 (lga 1336.) you want to buy a triple channel kit (3 stick of ram) to enable triple channel memory and not single.
and also, you don't need a soundcard, onboard audio has gotten so good recently. If you decide you don't like the audio get a card later.
    and read my signature.
AND I only use Corsair,XFX, Antec, and Seasonic for PSU's :D
  3. Thank you both. Really good feedback. I had no idea about the memory. I'll make sure I do some research.
