My Current System

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
Intel E8400 @ 3.0GHZ
Sigma Shark 635w PSU
2gb ddr2 800mhz (I also planning to go to 4gb)
1tb WD Green 32mb cache
500gb Hitachi 16mb cache
Coolermater Centurion 590
Acer 22" 1680 x 1050 monitor
Logitech x540 5.1

(ordered a CM 212)

I am considering two possible upgrades from my current system (I want to keep my power supply for the while till I can afford an upgrade)

1366 vs 1156

I am cosidering going with
1
ASUS SABERTOOTH 55i LGA 1156 Intel P55 $150
Intel Core i7 860 Processor Boxed (Microcenter) $208
Corsair TW3X4G1333C9 XMS3 4GB 2 X 2 GB 1333Mhz $ 67
Total $425 or

2
2.0 Asus Sabertooth X58 or $200
2.1 Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R or $180
2.2 ASRock X58 Extreme $165
Intel Core i7-950 3.06GHz Boxed Processor $238
Corsair TR3X3G1333C9 XMS3 3 GB 3 x 1 GB 1333MHz $60

Total $498 or
$478 or
$463

I really not sure which is the best direction to go with this possible upgrade

I didn't see a video card listed in your specs. Please list what the Rig is used for from most to least...

If you're going with 1156, you won't need anything more than an i5 750. If going with 1366 then the i7 950 is a great choice.

For motherboards, are you looking for anything special like SLI/Crossfire, USB 3.0, etc...?

For the RAM, i am sure it is good RAM but i see alot of DOA's and malfunctions with the Corsair TW3X4G1333C9 XMS3, the other RAM you have for 1366 is the same, just triple channel. Might want to look into G.Skill Ripjaws or something like that.

I am looking at sli board for a sli gtx 460 next year, usb 3.o and sata 6 seems to be a long way off being main stream and with the i7 860 and the i5 750 are their any games coming out that might utilize hyper-threading?

No games in the near future are going to make use of hyperthreading. Most games today don't make use of more than 2-3 cores. It seems likely that more physical cores are going to be readily available before we see any real gaming use for hyperthreading.

Just out of curiosity, are you seeing problems while gaming right now? The GTX 460 at 1680x1050 should be doing fine.

If you're just upgrading to upgrade, you might consider waiting a few months until SandyBridge & Bulldozer are out.

I think I can hold out considering I am not over-clocking my e8400. Exactly when are SandyBridge & Bulldozer coming out

Sometime in Q1 2011 for SB, Q1 or Q2 for Bulldozer is the most recent I've heard.
