respawning too fast

I installed a new sony dvd-rom drive, a yamaha cd-rw drive and removed my tekram scsi card and installed my wintv-pvr card (No more free PCI slots).

Installed all the drivers + software for win98 and win2k. all is ok.

Booted into Linux. During booting process, it was saying something about <font color=blue>mounts in / reaching maximum</font color=blue> or something like that. Wasn't paying too much attention. It did a check on the drives.

The graphical login did not load, it stayed in text mode, and the screen was flashing intermittently. It would flash for about 3 or 4 times and pause for a few seconds and carry on. After a while it just stopped and said something about <font color=blue>respawning too fast and waiting 5 minutes</font color=blue> or something.

I thought this usually happens if you don't shut down linux properly. I never needed to switch off or shut down improperly. Why is this happening? How can I fix it?

"x server respawning too fast", Correct?

Find the entry in /etc/inittab and delete the third field of your xdm. Now, can you do "startx"? Tell us what happens.

the xdm line in the inittab file:
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

deleted the third field (respawn).

typed 'startx', gave a no screeens found error.

typed 'prefdm', did the screen flashing thing.

typed 'telinit q', gave an invalid line error refering to the xdm line.



could it be some irq conflict or something from the new hardware or what. It was kinda sudden and out of the blue.

Rerun "Xconfigurator". Make appropriate changes and see if that helps If it doesn't, might be IRQ. Also, run X in probe only mode, and examine the standard error.

what sort of video card are you using? i've got some idea's but they depend on the card used...

there should be some more clues in /var/log/XFree86.0.log

This is bizarre! Everything is using IRQ 9

Its also used by the two USB Universal Host Controllers, and the Microsoft ACPI-Complient System.

13 - Numeric Data Processor

I'll check what the IRQ mapping is in 98 and report back.

that's the longest XFree86 log i've seen in a long time :-) Major PCI confusion going on there!

so everything was working fine, until you put these new cards in? TV Card is obviously confusing everyone. If Win2k is having irq issues as well, it's looking like a pnp problem rather than an X problem.

If you set your BIOS to PNPOS = NO and let it set the hardware up, do you get the same problem, or new ones? Do you use both USB controllers? If not disable one in BIOS, and give it a little more breathing room.

You posted Win98 and Win2k IRQ's, but no Linux info. cat /proc/interrupts and /proc/pci to see what's up. I'm guessing it'll be similar to what Win2k says.

Unfortunately, changing the pnp settings seems to be a black art in Linux. there are tools like setpci which should be able to do it, but I'm buggered if I can figure them out. The best bet seems to be BIOS/slot juggling to get things working.

Btw, once it's running ok, it might be worth looking at the NVIDIA driver, rather than the XFree86 nv one. Also, I believe the 2.4 kernel has improved pnp.

Putting the BIOS to non-PnP OS does get Linux to work, but I was hoping to fix the problem through linux, if possible. Win2k and 98, both work with the BIOS set to either of the PnP or non-PnP settings, without any problems. Win2k seems to like IRQ 9, even with PnP OS set to no.

Its not possible to disable one of the USB controllers. Its either all or none. Even before, I thought releasing some IRQ's might help, so I diabled the two serial and the parallel port. Didn't help though.

I didn't want to go into the comp and start all the slot juggling since both windows os' were working. I though Linux 'should' work too. I'm running Redhat Linux 7.1. The reported kernal version is Linux version 2.4.2-2. Shouldn't I be getting some of that improved pnp :wink: .

Fair enough, but if setting BIOS to non-PnP works, I'd go with it. As I posted before, sorting PCI PnP in Linux seems hard (to me, at least) so you've probably got your solution in the BIOS.

The reason I mentioned the kernel was this line in the log:
"Operating System: Linux 2.2.17-8smp i686 [ELF]"

So maybe check lilo.conf/rerun lilo and make make sure it really is booting the right one? It'll tell you on startup (or the first line of 'dmesg') anyway.

Also, there's no interrupt listed for your video card under Linux. I'm not sure if this is normal or not (you can often set "assign irq to agp video" in the BIOS), but you could try that, too and see if it helps unconfuse Linux.

I'd expect things to run like sh*t under Win2k with everything sharing IRQ 9. When that happened on my box, I could even hear my mouse move (USB and Sound Card sharing an IRQ)! I can't imagine having your video card interrupted by your modem being a good thing. But hey, if works...

When I'm copying something from the floppy, the system does slow down, but other than that I don't seem to be having problems.

I'm actually just waiting for the nForce motherboards to be released, when I'll be getting a big hard drive (80-100GB) and re-install everything from scratch. Before then, I just can't be asked to fiddle about with all of this.

I've been using Linux for a while and all seems ok until I face a problem. Otherwise Linux is cool, and unless something really forces me to go the WinXP route, Linux will be my Main OS.

I think I'll just leave things as they are for now, except looking at the kernel stuff. I got a kernel 2.4.9 or something on a Linux Magazine DVD. I'll try to build that. Should be interesting...
