First I really want to say I have been a lurker here for a long time and have found solutions to many issues I have encountered here. So now that I have that truth out I really hope someone can point me in the right direction.
When it comes to SCSI and Raid the more that I read,,,, the more confused I become. And I thought I have searched this forum pretty good but mebbee not.
What I have to work with is pretty decent,, hardware wise, more than enough power to put together a simple media server but I want to experiment at the same time with RAID for the OS and programs that will be on the "primary" drive(s).
I have 3 drives I wish to configure in a RAID array. The drives are all identical.

The controller card is an Adaptec 2940U/2940W/2940D PCI SCSI controller.
The "idea" I have is to "span" 2 of the drives for my OS and programs while the third drive would be a "copy" of the 2 spanned drives. (so there is a full backup).
I will then be using either SATA or PATA drives to store the data. I AM very open to suggestions and comments. I have been in IT for a pretty long time but this is my first real foray into building and setting up a physical array.
And while not "brown-nosing" This IS one of the best places I have found for quality information.
