how would an ATI Radeon hd 5770 fare up to an NVidia GTX card? which would better fit my budget? Running at a low resolution of 1600x900 full AA, AF

HD5770 is about on the same level (line) with GTX460, but GTX460 is faster than HD5770.
But on your resolution(1600x900) i think HD5770 is enough for you...

Phenom II X4 3.4ghz Black Edition, 2xgb DDR3 memory, not sure about my mobo but i think its something like gigabyte 8800mhu or something like that... 1Tb Hardisk 20" LG LED monitor

oh and about SLI features do I really need that? what ould be a good crossfire with 5770 would an Nvidia 8500GT work?

No, for your resolution, a single HD5770 is more than enough to play most of games with HIGH setting. No need to crossfire or SLI.

So, your current card is 8500GT? Well, HD5770 is MUCH better (FAR) from 8500GT.

Sorry for being repetitive but I want to explore SLI cause my mobo's got an extra PCI-E slot and I dont wanna waste it so what do you think I could do with it, I still wanna use my Nvidia 8500gt though so any graphics card out there that I can utilize with my SLI?

First find out exactly what motherboard you have as this is what will determine whether and what dual card config you can run, either way IIRC the 8500GT is not an SLi'able card and even if it was there would be no point as it's such a weak card.
