They're about the same performance.
What card exactly do you want to get? If the GTX470 is cheaper then go for it...

What PSU do you currently have? That might be the deciding factor.

This is nvidia fanboyism.

The 5850 consumes less power and produces less heat than the 470, and you should be able to overclock it to near/above 5870 levels.

The 470 includes PhysX and Cuda, has a easier driver install but produces more heat and consumes more power. I'm not sure how good it's overclocking potential is.

So we come back to OP's PSU since it has to be more powerful to power the GTX470 and therefore could be the deciding factor.

5c is not something worth worrying about unless you are a hardened fanboy of course.

If both cards are OC'd then I think the speed advantage would stay with the 470.

if u wer in my place...which 1 would you get????? ;)

Reply to bhagat666

GTX 470 if you don't mind the extra heat. It's generally better than the HD 5850 performance-wise.

Reply to skolpo

I'd go with either the 470 or a pair of 460's, most likely the 460's. The only reason I haven't gone for any of the 4xx cards is because I'm not happy about the disabled cores.

extra heat wont affect the other parts rite???

A whole 5c with the reference cooler or the same or lower with a non reference cooler.

As long as you have good airflow, it shouldn't affect other parts by much. If you're worried, you can always look for cards that have an external exhaust (labeled EE) but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

what are the advantages of those disabled cores....are they enabled on the 5850.....are 2 460's on the same price range nd are they better than the other 2 cards

Don't get swayed by this "extra heat" nonsense, both cards will get hot when under load.

The disabled cores on the Nvidia cards are lowering their performance potential by a few percent but they are still faster than the ATi cards nonetheless. 2x 460's would give you GTX480 like performance for less than the cost of a 480 .

thanx for ur help man.....i guess ill get a 460 then nd after 2-3 months ill buy another 1

Reply to bhagat666

Go for the 1GB versions if funds allow and remember that you can't SLi a 768MB with a 1 GB version.

To the OP, I have a gtx 470+650w PSU+95w processor. It runs pretty sweet at stock clocks. When OC'ing (cpu+msi afterburner) though, I would get random restarts in my games. I dunno if it was from the OC, cause it ran stable in prime 95 "blend" test overnight, or from PSU issues (470 min requirements:600w and 38a on the 12v rail). I dunno. I turned my overclocks off. And random reboots stopped. Like I said, I dunno. Just my experience.

1 more thing dude........the 5850 is abt a whole cheaper in my country than the 460 or the 470........................so out of the three which 1 should i get ........2*460's 2*470's or 2*5850's

Reply to bhagat666

If you're going to choose simply on price then get the cheapest ones out there, I use other criteria to choose graphic cards.

Like I said previously, I would go for a pair of GTX460 1GB cards right now if I had to replace my current ones.
