What should I look for in a case fan replacement?

My first PC build was in an antec 300 case. The 2 fans are stating to make noise. 1 @ startup - and the other all the time. I unplugged one fan - and am running only 1x120mm case fan right now and I'd like to get to at least 2 again.

What should I be looking for in a replacement fan - besides 120 mm?

* Current fans plugged direct into MOLEX Power Supply connector with 3 speed control - but I havent' seen much of that in terms of aftermarket? Should I be looking for that again - or should I look for something to plug direct into the motherboard?

* What's the life of a typical fan. Is a year about normal - or did these die quickly?

* Any brands I should look for - or stay away from?

* I'm fairly budget conscious - but like to buy quality within that parameter.

Feel free to add anything I haven't thought of in my above questions - as I have no experience with Case fans beyond what I've owned via pre-purchased case or DELL PC - I'd like to get a fan or 2 pretty quick here.

Thanks

You don't mention the age of your case or how old the fans were when they died or started giving you problems.
Antec honors their warranties if it was within the coverage period.
Personally i have a 902 with 5 Antec fans in it and no problems after 14months.
I also plan on replacing the fans with exact models from Antec when they die.
I like their performance and noise signature= quiet imo.

Btw i like Antec fans so much i've put them in my CM690II case as well.

The PC build is about 18 months old right now - and I've been using the Antec 300 case during that entire time.

They probably started making noticable noise when the PC starts - for the past couple of months. Probably a few weeks that the top fan was making noise all the time. I unplugged the top fan yesterday - since it was so loud it was impossible to ignore.

Contact customer support if you're still under warranty!

If the case is older i would still replace the fans with Antecs.

Try pushing the fan assy onto the main body,
sometimes they work loose after a time, it may solve your noise problem

I'll definitely try customer service - see if they're under warranty. And antec fans are pretty inexpensive - so I can go that route again. Is there any preference from the 3 speed fans - with switch - vs Motherboard controlled fan speed < I think the smaller plugs function that way > A few of the models - it looks like there is a way to control the fan speed via your motherboard.

Is one preferable to the other?

The only extra Antec fans i've ever bought were the 3 spd LED Tri-Cools with the switch.
They were mounted in easily accessible locations where i have the option of switching the speed.
Low is all i ever use and everything is nice and cool/quiet.
Other then that i have 4 fans that came with my case.902 all set on low.
In your case i would probably buy a TwoCool™ 140mm Blue for your top exhaust.

I bought these but payed like $11 Canadian.

Call them. You might not get as lucky as I did, but Antec is great about replacing components
