I have an old msi p965 platinum board which has the jmicron/pata controller I'm using for two ide dvd drives. the motherboard has sata plugs (3 hdd plugged in, 3 sockets are unused) so I'm wondering if I can plug a sata dvd into any of the unused sata sockets? or hdd and optical can't be mixed like that?

Yes. Any SATA device (SSD, HDD, Optical drive) is compatible with any SATA port.
