The resolution of the first one is higher than the second, but it's also larger. At native resolution, they both should have the same icon/text size.

If I was buying these, I'd buy the second, mostly due to looks

The pixel pitch of the 1st is 0.287, the 2nd is 0.276, I doubt you would notice a 4% difference in the size of text and icons. The 2nd monitor is more modern, but you might miss those 300,000 extra pixels of vertical real estate. Both are quality brands.

Bought the Acer monitor. Should I use the hdmi that comes with the monitor or dvi2vga adapter?

If you can use hdmi, use it.
