Hello...Thinking of a quad core (Phenom 940)..Problem is, will it somehow work with the crosshair motherboard (1st version)..i've read threads that there is a bios update that will allow the upgrade to quad..0905 beta Its not on the asus website...v,0904 is but according to asus forums. This version is just the pits. I did, mistakenly, think i could run quad on the crosshair, installed one but the asus utility (AI-Booster) only detects dual core running..( 2 bars measuring cpu use) I would think booster would show 4 if a quad was in....Currently have the am2 6000 in it. Any thoughts ???

You could pick up a inexpensive AM2+ motherboard for pretty cheap to use with a AM2+ Phenom II X4 940 BE CPU and reuse your DDR2 Ram,other components.

AM2+ Motherboards are starting to disappear from neweggs website (being phased out although they are still somewhat popular as it was a very versatile platform (Could use AM2,AM2+ and AM3 CPU's (if supported with a BIOS update)).What is a plus is that many of the remaining ones are being sold at a lower price.
Here is one that supports the AM2+ 940 BE CPU although there are several others.

However if you have a original Crosshair motherboard what you could do is opt for a
Phenom X4 9850 BE CPU instead although the main gains would be only in applications or games that can use more than 2 CPU cores. Some original Phenom 9850's are still being sold (haven't seen a 9950 in quite a while though).

Here is a benchmark comparison between the Phenom X4 9850 BE and the Athlon 64 6000+
