I have a Compaq Presario x1000 laptop (Windows XP Pro). Think my cat
walked on the keyboard and now the screen is hardly readable. Tried
plugging in a LCD monitor and it is totally blank.

There are a number of Function keystrokes that can be made by use of the Fn
key plus another key on the keyboard.

It seems that cat has managed to step on the Fn key and then on the keys
which turned off the external monitor and the key which changes the screen
brightness.

These should be well documented in your users manual.

After you've fixed the laptop maybe you should have a look at one
