Need a guide for a gaming rig on a budget

Ok my problem is I want a gaming rig that can play crisis call of duty games fallout oblivion etc and im so stressed cause the wife has put me on a 500 dollar budget for this idea of mine
so im asking all u guys what would be the best setup for what im wanting to do and is this possible ? if so any help or if u guys know a build would be nice i could possibly talk her into a little bit over 500 but not much if that helps any thanks guys

Approximate Purchase Date: about a week from now
Budget Range: $500 to $550
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming,movie converting
Parts Not Required:keyboard,mouse , monitor,speakers,
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: whichever has the best deal not a big deal to me
Country of Origin: united states
Parts Preferences: by brand or type well dont know i heard amd is better but not picky what ever will get the job done
Overclocking: yes if it will help me get more power for the money
SLI or Crossfire: if it fits budget why not
Monitor Resolution: 1024x768, or higher if possible
Additional Comments: would like to have a decent looking case though but if it cant be done i dont want to sacrifice power and performance for a case, i want to be able to play games liek call of duty crisis fallout 3 and new vegas ,oblivion, splinter cell etc etc without having to turn everything down where the games look like crap so hopefulyl you guys can figure somethign out for me thanks for the help in advace -

1024x768 ? Is that the native resolution of your minitor ? Then that's what you play at. Here are a few items.... the processor should be at least $10 cheaper so keep your eyes open. The PSU you chose is fine.. that's where the alternative mobo and ram come in.. to save a little money.
