Change Device name

Hi guys, it's been a while.

I just set up a new monitor, and it is obnoxiously labeled as "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" and I would like to change the device description field to something for aesthetically pleasing to me, like "Main Monitor" or somesuch. Is this possible?

Note: I'm using Windows 7

Just to be clear, I'm talking about the hardware properties.

You can try running Windows Update. I recently installed Win7 on a new Sandy Bridge machine, and at first it detected my monitor as a Generic PnP Monitor. One of the Windows Updates it downloaded was the specific driver for my monitor. Now it's got the make and model listed.

If that doesn't work, you can try updating the driver manually through Device Manager. See if you can find the make and model of your monitor in Windows' built-in drivers.

So, you can't just change the name to, say, "Super 1337 Monitor?"

Sorry, I'll rephrase... You can't change it without some ridiculously complex registry editing?

lol nope. The registry editing method is the only way to change the name of a driver/device.

Ah well, not a huge deal anyway... pretty crappy monitor I plan on replacing once I have the unallocated funds
