I use Alt Gr - haven't so far found it has caused a problem with shortcuts.

On Second thoughts - are IBM just pendantic or what? What's wrong with
putting a spare assignable key on the keyboard if they really don't want to
put a windows key on it?

Apart from that, though, on balance, I do like my laptop a lot.

I agree. What's wrong with including the Windows Key? Is that supposed to be
in some ways worse?
One of their sales people told me it's because they don't have enough room.
I mentioned they don't have any less room to work with than all the other
makers. Oh well, I guess they just want the space-bar to be extra long.
I also like my lap top a lot and am getting more and more hooked on it every
day. Especially like the five hours or so battery life.

Thanks.

Ctrl-Esc and Shift-F10 are the standard combinations to display the start
menu and the shortcut menu respectively. You could have found this out
from Windows Help although I admit that if you don't know the right
keywords it can be difficult to find.

A lot of people _hate_ the Windows keys. Just get in the way--the only time
I touch them is when I miss the Ctrl- or Alt- keys, which are considerably
less useful than they once were because I keep hitting the damned useless
Windows keys.
