What processor to pick for my new computer?

i7 950 with decent mobo and low video card or...
AMD Phenom II Black edition with good mobo and good video card...

This is not an uber gaming machine, but i want to have a good operating machine for a few years with some decent upgrade options... like with the 950 I could always go 980X at a later date if more performance was needed. Or is the Black edition well enough? Is AMD' next chip going to share the same socket as the Phenom, allowing for an upgrade option?

don't bother on upgrades for a year, or so....

amd phenom 955... not anything higher.... in this case anyway...

AMD's next chip will my AM3+ as far as I am aware it (from AMD's slides) wont be backwards compatiable but I could be wrong.

As of right now I have a half dead AMD (fried vid card, dying hard drive) that served it's purpose for 5 years and now I am looking to build a new PC. I really want longevity out of it, and I want it to handle anything I can dish out without a hiccup. It seems the i7 has the better overall performance but at a higher cost, I'm wondering if I can offset that cost and get a great AMD/MOBO/Vid card combo that will run with that i7.

What about 6 core AMD? Are they much better than the quad core?
