4G Corsair 800mhz ram
Maxtor 80G -win Xp pro
Seagate Barracuda -1000G Win 7 Ulti
now running 9800gtx+ Manli 512MB (Msi 4870 512 OC)

Not at all...
Don't spend any more money on this old PC, seriously, no matter what card, you will get the same performance (even 9800GTX+ and HD4870 are useless).

Save your money and get a whole new system, sorry buddy...

Can you get any other card? The GTX 280 is quite an inefficient card compared to the GtX 460, GTX 285 and GTX 275 in around the same price range. Either of those cards will be a decent upgrade from the 9800GTX+. If it was my choice, I would get the GTX 460 1GB over the GTX 280. If your only option is the GTX 280, you will see a decent increase in performance. However, I wouldn't get it unless the price is too low to turn down.

Let me ask you something, P4 is stand for Pentium 4 or Phenom X4 or what?
Because if that's Pent. 4 then it's totally useless to buy any card anymore...

he has a P4 CPU, his video card is not the issue. wa1 is correct on a re-build.

"630" is the tip off that it is a Slugtium 4 as the older Phenom x4 very very rarely topped 3ghz and it wouldn't be a Phenom 2 as they don't have a "630" model #. If it were a Athlon he would have said that instead of P4 630.

Woop, totally skipped past the CPU. Meh, if or when he does upgrade, my advice can apply then.

the original phenoms never reached 3ghz, they only hit 2.6ghz at stock with the 9950

the phenom II x4 are all 8xxx & 9xxx series

the athlon II x4 620 runs at 2.6ghz and he stated "P4"

so using his detective cap, nforce came to the conclusion it must be a Pentium 4. :D

When I first started out with computers it was on old dumpster dived P1s and old MACs that didn't even work. Then I progressed up to much better hardware while spending much of my time doing research. As they say an enthusiasts when it comes to hardware. Then I learned how to do hardware mods ect so over the years I got better. Sometime one has to own a lot to learn as much.

It is P4 3.0 Prescott HT,
Maybe is an old model so not many people know,
This rig i am stil keeping for multimedia and some light gaming,
sometimes, i do connect it to 42"plasma to watch movie, eg 720p played before.
Building I7 rig soon,
Current rig performance are,
Dirt 2, 1280x720, 2xaa, all setting max, 55 avg FPS,
the gtx 280 i am getting a a old card, cost me ard 200usd
So asking suggestion for changing to this card, gtx280 :)
September 24, 2010 1:51:55 PM

Nah, don't do it.
It will be bottlenecked bigtime!
September 24, 2010 5:46:41 PM

Just keep the 9800GTX+ if you don't want to upgrade the rest of your computer. Putting in a GTX 280 paired with that P4 is no use. Also, $200 for a used GTX 280 is overpriced.

ok thanks :)
i will save that money for water cooled :)
