In the next month or two I need to get a PC laptop and after reading reviews
and some feedback, I'm more confused than ever!
I want reliability, speed, bright 15" minimum screen, good sound, good graphic
ability, and good service from the manufacturer.
I want an 80-100 gig hard drive, 1024 ram, modem, ethernet card, fire wire,
blue tooth, full keyboard, floppy drive. I'd also like to be able to play a cd
without booting up the computer.
Since I'll mainly be using it as a substitute for a desktop, I want something
that I can use a cordless keyboard and cordless mouse with.
I would also like a removable bay if possible.
Weight isn't a big factor, since I'm mainly going to use it at home.
The three manufacturers that I considered based on reviews were HP, Qosmio, and
Dell; But I read about problems with HP breaking down because of a cheap part
(one person said the computer died right after the warranty expired and HP
wanted $900 to repair it)!, Qosmio is supposedly over priced, and Dell service,
according to some in lacking and the reviews weren't as good on Dell, except
for the XPS.
My price range is up to $3,000.
Does anyone have any suggestions or have any information about new models which
are due out next month?

Hi June,
The HP Pavilion zd7010us meets all of your requirements except for
the floppy and Bluetooth. I just keep an external floppy in my
computer bag (I can't even tell you when I last used it). As to
Bluetooth, I picked up a D-Link USB dongle that works great paired
to either my Motorola V600 cellular phone or my Palm Tungsten|T3 PDA.
I bought this machine back in November of 2003 and it just keeps on
working.
As to HPs breaking down . . . all computers break down. The first
accessory that I bought for my machine was the 3 year accidental
damage warranty. $350 is cheap for that much peace of mind.
If you would like the specs on the HP Pavilion zd7010us let me know
and I will post them.

I would appreciate you're posting the specs. I went to HP's site and
could not find that model.
We just bought our daughter an HP computer at Best Buy day before
yesterday. It's a nice unit; but I wanted a bit more than that model.
I'm interested to see what the model you mentioned has. Is it a newer
model? I'm wondering why I can't find it on their site.
They do have an 800 series, which got a pretty good review.
Thanks!
June

You ask a lot of a notebook, and $3000 should do you well. I am an IBM fan,
but HP & Dell have a commanding share of the market. And honorable mention
goes to fujitsu. Get a big screen, powerful processor, and extended
warranty. This year Windows Multimedia is big, and that's what you should
get even if you never think you'll use it. Look at the Fujitsu n6010 for
$2349. It has it all, and with warranty, you're in budget.
then look at hp and dell in the same price range. zd7010us is a fine
choice, yet the zd8000 is more like the n6010. Either would be good
choices, neither are small nor light. So here are two comparable, powerful
units to compare.
Later if you want something portable, look at a table pc.

Thanks for taking the time to post. I think that if I choose HP, I'd probably
go with the newer model. I've seen it and it's nice. It even has a special
package with better speaker and separate keyboard and mouse that looks good.
