remote access my PC

I have a netgear wireless router and i would like to access my home pc from work, if i open a port to access my pc is there a way to secure the open port (password ETC.)so that no one else can getinto my system or will that port just be open?

the password protection would be on your computer, not on the router.

The router should have a pw enabled to access settings, and the computer should have pw enabled also.
Make sure admin and guest accounts have pw's also.
