I currently have a GTX285, and I am interested in "building" my first SLI or dual card comp.

I understand I can get another GTX285, but...
is it possible to actually get a GTX470 to get the D11 functionality and assign the GTX285 to just Physx and let the newer GTX470 do all the hard work?

What are the pro cons?

Case size and power demands are not a factor.

Thank you!

Pro's:
Very hi-fi config.
Cons:
PC would be hot as an oven and would be a power hungry monster! :)

Advise:
Sell of the GTX285. See what $ you get and buy the GTX470 SLI. Would save you some money. Normally i prefer single card configs.

i dont recommend using the 285 for physx, gts 240 barely utilizes 40% gpu in most games, and only goes up to 80% in batman: aa, a 285 would be way overkill, i would go with a 460 sli setup, these cards are sick, and most of them have extremely high headroom for oc, much cheaper and just as effective as the 470 setup, 2 460s will max out pretty much everything at 1920x1080

My recommendation would be either a single GTX 470 or 2 GTX 460s. SLIed GTX 460s can match an HD5970 at stock whole costing much less and can OC a huge amount(30-40%.) On the other hand a single GTX 470 should already be fantastic on its own for any resolution up to and including 1920x1200 and can OC a similar amount. It depends on what you want to spend I guess. If you are interested in 3 monitor gaming then I guess lean towards the GTX 460s as you need to SLI to use 3 monitors at once with Nvidia. Then again you could always add another GTX 470 later as well if necessary.
As for the GTX 285, Physx is a worthwhile feature in about 5 games. IMO it's just not worth it unless you plan on playing those specific games a LOT. Probably best off just Ebaying it.

Thank you for the answers guys! So GTX285 + 460 or 470 is not the smartest comp.

Would it be worthwhile getting another gtx285? I mean, besides the obvious extra muscle in a gtx460 sli (or even gtx470 sli) that I would almost never utilize, what else I would gain? For instance shader models,dx11, or things like that.

Based on your responses, I am thinking I would go for one gtx470, or another gtx285.

Any other comments ideas welcome!

From a quick look on Ebay another GTX 285 is going to cost you around $200 probably which isn't really worth it imo. Selling it and put that money towards a GTX 470 is a better idea. Unless your resolution is very high it is all you'll really need and it will give you all the latest features.
