What was the specific type and wattage of the unit that died?
Also what pc was it in a custom build or a brand name like Dell/HP etc.
Be specific please.

No, no you cannot.

How old is the system? I doubt it even has anything that uses the -5V rail and it should have had a +5VSB rail in the old one anyway.

Give us the model number of the system and we can find you a unit that can replace it.

that powersupply ive had before and fail,. i wont even touch non 80 plus bronze certified ps anymore, most of thermal take ps arent great, so try to stay away from them as a general rule of thumb of course theres a few exceptions, but ya, silverstone and corsair hx series and seasonic are top quality id stick with, and there not all that expensive either depending on which model ur interested in,

and ya dadiggle asked what gpu ur running, be good to know how much wattage u need

Either of these units would be suitable replacements.
The Antec is higher quality but the OZC is good i own one(it's been fine).
XFX 650W units are also on sale at the Egg, but i'm not outright recommending them at the moment due to the numerous reports of fan noises/clicking.
Otherwise they are excellent units.

thermaltake power supplies arent exactly what i call good, and i am putting that mildy (they kinda suck,if you want the truth)

that said, i recommend the following 3 brands, along with others that are good too:
seasonic (the best)
corsair (very good, some made by seasonic)
antec (older ones sucked, new ones good)

some other good brands:
xfx, nzxt, enermax
