If you dont want to totally get a new platform, you can at least do a few upgrades to modernize it a little.

Get a new CPU, like a Core 2 Duo E7500, which is a 2.93GHz Wolfdale Based Core 2 Duo, this CPU is about twice as powerful as your older Core 2 Duo. Its $124 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115056

Get a better video card, I recconmend a ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5670

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150467

Start saving for a new mainboard, cpu, and memory.

The video card you can use on a new mainboard, and you can just sell your old CPUs.

The E7500 will not work with that motherboard, none of the Wolfdales will, please read my post above and look at the compatibility list.

He could get a more powerful video card though and then use it for a new system at a later date...

There are some motherboards that are AM2+ that will allow you to use your DDR2 RAM and support phenom II x4 Deneb 955 CPU's But for $300.00, that's all you'll be able to get and it wouldn't warrant much of a performance boost since you'll want to get a better video card too, so...

Your best bet is to save more and get a new motherboard/CPU/RAM/Video Card and possibly power supply
