I'm considering to buy HP Z600 workstation, with 1 CPU for now (xeon 5620), but want to have the ability to upgrade with 2nd cpu in the future. I noticed HP offers 2 types of memory modules when configuring online. 1-cpu memory for a single core, 2-cpu for dual core.
But I haven't found any sort of these memory types at (for example) Kingston website.
Is this just kinda HP's spacial feature, or have i missed anything?
More than likely the 2-cpu entries mean you get the listed amount for both CPUs, because on server mainboards, each CPU has its own memory slots (at least the ones I've seen do). The memory is the same, but that's how HP keeps track of how much you want for each CPU.
Looking at those options, if you ask for an odd number of sticks it has to be for a single CPU which makes sense, you want to keep them both balanced, for any even number over 2 sticks it also has a be for two CPUs since it seems each CPU only gets 3 memory slots so you cant do 4 sticks in 3 slots for a single CPU board.
