Moving hard drive to a new machine

If I were to take a hard drive that was installed it a Gateway sx2855, could i install it into a bare bone system and keep my data and my copy of windows 7? Realy the most important thing is keeping windows 7

no. if it was come with the gateway, it is only license on that gateway only.

I figured as much. Is there any way to retain windows 7?

You could buy a new key. for the new computer and move the hard drive there. But with new hardware, cpu and motherboard, most of the time, you will need to reinstall windows to get it to work properly.
