Hi all,

I am looking at building a new system for my Father to replace his 6 year old Gateway desktop.

He does basic internet, home finance and photo editing. His problem is that he tends to open a bunch of browser windows at once as well as have Quicken running. I'm thinking he needs a triple core CPU at a minimum as well as 6 gig of RAM. Here's the basic specs:

Approximate Purchase Date: Next 30 days

Budget Range: $500-$700 including monitor but before rebates

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Internet (multiple windows open), Personal Finance (Quicken), basic photo editing and scanning

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, speakers

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg

Country of Origin: US

Parts Preferences: no preference

Overclocking: no

SLI or Crossfire: no

Monitor Resolution: 1280x1024 should be fine

Storage: 500-1000 gig

What suggestions do you guys have?

Thanks for the help!

triple core should be ok, and for $700, I think we can get a decent system together, including a monitor.

just how much photo editing is he doing: just minor fixes like removing redeye and cropping images and similar issues, or dozens of layers and custom photoshop filters?

That'll really determine if you need a dedicated graphics card or not.

The photo editing is pretty basic, definitely not photoshop. I think he uses the software that came with his Canon Powershot.
