Fire Wire Port

I recently purchased a system for video editing and it is working really well except for when I am importing video. For some reason there is lag and distortion. It is not coming from the DVD player becasue my preview monitor looks great but the computer screen is showing delay and distortion. And when I play back the footage that I have imported it is distorted.

I am using the Ultra 7 PORT Fire Wire / USB 2.0 PCI Card

I am wondering if it is the card or do I need a more high end firewire cable.

Not a techie so please help!
