Intel core 2 duo vs i5

I am looking to purchase a new laptop. I'm looking at the 13 inch macbook pro but concerned about the processor. Not sure if I should be. the 15 inch has the i5 processor and better graphics card. Not sure what would be best considring intel coming out with the 2nd generation i processors.

More about intel core
  1. The i5 has a better integrated graphics, as well as a more energy efficient design. Also depending on the chip, you might have a 4 core chip while the core 2 duo is only 2 cores. The i5 is a better choice.
  2. Also, the second gen i processor won't be available for apples for a while so if you wait, you'll be in for quite a long wait!
  3. Well it all depends what you are going to be using it for. For Mobility and just checking e-mail youtubeing and etc. the intel core 2 duo. If your going to use it for a little less protability and more video editing and more applications that need more cpu and graphics abilities. The intel core i5. For me personly I would go with the intel core i5. Also check your budget do you want to spend the extra cash. Also the i5 will be able to compare with processors down the road. Apple is always behind on computer hardware so it might be a little bit of time before the second gen i5 is out.

that's coming from someone who uses AMD, right? :pfff:

WHAT!? Why does that make him use AMD? He is giving reasons why an INTEL Core i5 is better than a Core 2 Duo... Help, or leave... :pfff:

I would get a core i5. If your buying a Mac, you are probably going to be doing more than just E-mail. More CPU intensive things. But, if you are really only going to do E-mail, get the Core 2 Duo.
  6. Any particular reasons for getting a Mac..?? You can get better spec notebooks from other vendors for the price of a Macbook..

I know, I hate Macs... Bad price/performance ratio. I also like AMD for that very reason!
  8. Hackintosh........

How is that a hackintosh? He is buying a real Mac, not a PC and turning it into a Mac. He is just asking what CPU for his Mac he should get.
  10. It was just a idea since everybody was talking about how a Intel laptop is a better
    idea
    SO
using a Intel PC based laptop and dual booting with Mac OS would
    be a legitimate idea
if they need to use Mac based software
    that MANY are doing nowadays
It does give the OP an option that they might have not known about

Not that I really had to explain myself to you, did I? :)

Yes, you did. I thought you said he had a hackintosh. Anywho, Windows 7 is waaaaaaayyyyyyy better anyway.
  12. @ king smp Hey, you changed your self-quote. You said you had the other one on a day you were feeling, "Evil", and that you were going to change it. Were you feeling evil the day you wrote, "No one can hear you scream under water" too? Haha

yup, i have snow leopard 10.6.2 running on my Acer laptop, my HP and my custom build =D in my opinion its even better than a imac because i can do everything on it AND overclock! (although most of the time i boot into windows 7, just better imo)

I don't reallylike the OS X set up. It bugs me...

    %100 agree

but I want to get a copy of a Mac OS
and dual boot myself so I can learn Mac
    never worked with one
and I am a so-called paid computer tech
just no Macs come my way to fix

a perfect world would be a Win7 Ultimate,Mac OS and Ubuntu triple boot :)

I have done the dual boot with XP Pro and Ubuntu and that was cool

I know the game is kinda of pushing it
but I believe kids have to learn the difference
    between pretend and reality

I try to teach her the stuff on TV/computer is
make believe and dont take it seriously

Local and world news is scarier!

I swear, I am not trying to be a creeper, but how old is your daughter if you are still teaching her real and pretend? Bioshock and a 3 year old?
  25. No just turning ten
she does know the difference of course
    but
she still gets scared by scary movies etc
like most kids around her age
I want her to learn that the horror movies and
    creepy games are just silliness

The real monsters in this world are cancer, poverty, starvation and terrorism etc
    Not vampires or zombies
    Those are just silly fun

Poetry, pure poetry... Haha  I see. I just thought you had a 6 year old playing Bioshock, and I was like, "WHAT THE HECK?!?! THIS GUY IS A MANIAC!" haha
  27. Cool :)

she is actually right next to me reading this BTW

she says "she has alot of fun playing BShock but is still scared of alot
of pretend monsters like Freddy Krueger (i did let her watch the cleaner parts of
Nightmare on Elm Street since she was having nightmares from the TV commercials
and I wanted her to see that Freddy is kinda of corny with his jokes)

also I showed her Youtube of Robert Englund (actor-Freddy) and how
he looks like a nice old grandfather
    she felt better afterwards LOL
  28. Nice, is she homeschooled? Or just a half day or something? You sound like a good father. My brother (10) and sister (9) are still scared of the dark. They have to sleep with someone. It is good that you are teaching your daughter now.

No problem. I hope you can mod the PSP and Wii. I don't even have to first clue to coding and madding and all that, so I can't help you. That's beyond me.

    Happy Easter break!
  32. The PSP 3000 is at $130 USD so I got that plus a 8gb mem stick plus
Sonic RIvals,Hannah Montana and Sega Genesis 28 game collection

the sega genesis collection is kinda for me too LOL
she likes it and it has all the cool games from the 16bit Genesis which
i loved back in the day
It is great to play all the games that I couldnt afford back then :)

No I cant take a chance with modding them
Though when Sonys NGP game player comes
out then she will get that and I will get her PSP :) LOL
    then the fun begins
I had to set up a network render machine with Sony Vegas Pro 8 to
handle the work load from transcoding her movies and videos
That was alot of fun but hard work at same time
  34. Nice.

Yeah, same. I think he got his answer and just didn't pick it though. Here, I will set him straight, RIGHT NOW! If you are buying a Mac just to buy and Mac and just check E-mail, get the C2D. If you are actually doing something with your machine, like video editing, multi-tasking, playing games, etc. get the Core i5. There is your answer.

    Symmetric Multi Processing
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symmetric_multiprocessing

basically have two cpus in one tower
originally referring to dual Xeon or Opteron etc workstations and servers
I owned an older Dual Xeon for years and love dual cpu setups
    Dont let anybody fool you
if you have a chance at a modern dual CPU setup cheap then go for it
    More cores the better
Really expensive and not gaming machines since they dont overclock or usually have SLI/CF etc
but for encoding/rendering/multitasking they cant be beat by anything
if you look at multithreaded benches like Cinebench they are dominated by dual CPU setups
how can you not like the idea of 8 cores/16 threads (or more) with 32gb ram!

do you mean why we "fight" on here

    if you mean that
well some members are rude and ignorant
usually young kids (nothing personal to the good kids)
or thirty year old people living in mothers basement

I have seen others or myself get insulted for no reason
