802 11b preamble

I have 802.11b premable on my laptop built-in (vista). The wireless router is beside the laptop but my laptop gets very low signal (3 bars) and when I move the laptop to the next room, I loose connect (one bar).

There is no interference, I dont have any wireless devices at home.
No concrete walls, all wood.
I updated the firmwares on the wireless router
I updated the wireless drivers on my laptop, it says I have the latest driver.
I have tried two different routers, both did the same, I am assuming my built-in wireless card on my laptop is not good enough.
The other room is 5 meters away, it is driving me insane!

I think the problem is in my laptop wireless, but I don't know how to fix it. Maybe because I have 802.11b premable and it should be 802.11g . I don't know.! It is a new Toshiba Satellite laptop. recently I used a recovery disc and I might have used the wrong disc. Any advises?

Any help please! Please email me to alberto_canada@hotmail.com. Many thanks in Advance!

Hi Emerald,

I did download the driver you indicated above. The signal is the same no change when my laptop is beside the router. Is there any other driver that can give me a better signal?

Would updatiing the new driver help?

Also, for the type of laptop I have, shouldn't I have 802 11g instead of 802 11b preamble?

Please advise and thank you for helping me.
