Could any of you guys tell me how many platters and capacity per platter does Western Digital RE 2TB WD2000FYYZ have? It would be really helpful if you could also provide a source.

Thanks.

WD's datasheet doesn't specify the number of platters:
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-771444.pdf

However, numerous Internet sites refer to 800GB-per-platter technology:
http://www.storagereview.com/wd_now_shipping_4tb_wd_re_sata_and_nearline_sas_drives

This would suggest that the 2TB model has 3 platters and either 5 or 6 heads, depending on whether the platters are fully stroked or short stroked.

AISI, the published transfer rate of 164MB/s is consistent with an 800GB-per-platter data density. A 500GB-per-platter non-AF drive typically benchmarks at 130MB/s so ...

sqrt(800 / 500) x 130MB/s = 164.4 MB/s
