HP 842C printer won't print black

Hello,
I've never had a problem with this printer. Yesterday put in a new black catridge & it worked fine. Nice and dark and cisp. Today it won't put out ink. The color cartridge will. I've (gently) shaken it in all directions & taken it out & put it back in several times. No luck. It's new (refurb).
