Saphire HD6950 not working on P8Z68-V mobo

Hello,
Just built my first computer running windows 7 and everything is running fine except my graphics card, it seems to not be recognised by the mobo at all and as such i cant use it. Looking at the box my mobo only has PCIe 2.0 slots instead of 2.1 which the GPU uses


could this be the cause and are there any fixes?

It isn't a compatibility issue. Have you tested the GPU in another system to make sure that it isn't defective?
