Looking for a good browser and converter (don't like the Canon offerings
including Digital Photo Pro) and downloaded the latest pro version of
BreezeBrowser for the 15 day trial. Happy with the raw conversion features
etc but have problems with getting different functions and data showing up
in the exif data screens when looking at raw files CR2 or jpgs. For
instance when the file is a raw file I get all the custom function data
displayed as well as the focus points showing up on the viewer window.
However, with JPG I can not get the focus points to show and get no custom
function data or program mode nor subject distance (always shows (0.03). Is
this just the way the program is structured or what? Any and all views
welcome.

Have you tried Canon Zoombrowser 5? It's a huge improvement
over previous versions.

I know a couple of guys who swear by BB but the consensus is that since it uses
the Canon conversion module with a nicer user interface it's not as good as
other non-Canon options.
You might try Capture One 3.6 LE ... the Windows version supporting the 20D has
been delayed while they re-write the Windows code (the Mac version has been out
for a while) but according to C1 it will be available for download Monday Jan
17. I tried Canon's DPP and their File Viewer Utility (FVU), BreezeBrowser,
Adobe CS RAW and C1 when I got a 1Ds and bought C1 since the demosaicing was
cleaner with this than with the others I tried, which is important if you are
printing large or if you are upsampling your files, less important if you're
not. You can get up to 45 days of free trials with no restrictions (unlike BB
they don't watermark the output files) by downloading the Capture One LE and
Pro versions. Worth a look.

I can't get Zoombrowser 5 to work with my 20D. When I try to aquire images,
I get some sort of "camera is busy" error, regardless of the situation or
camera setting. I tried it on several separate occasions.
If I'm overlooking something, or if there's a way to make it work, please
let me know. I would VERY much prefer using zoombrowser instead of it's
wimpy, worthless little brother, the EOS viewer utility.

Version 4.1 can be downloaded and used with all functions available
for, I think it is, 15 days. (An upgrade v 4.2 is due soon.) After
using the Canon software I tried Bibble Pro for the trial period. I
was very pleased and ended up purchasing it. There is a Lite version
as well.
Both versions are reasonably priced. The support on Bibble's web
forum is outstanding. I strongly suggest you take a look at it.
While this sounds like a commercial I assure you I am only a user of
BibblePro.

Mainly that it's a lot easier to simply copy the files to your hard drive
and work from them there.
You can either copy from the camera or use a card reader, of course.

Are you running Windows XP? Does another
application start when you connect the camera?
Have you tried using a card reader? It's a much
better way to load pictures than connecting the
camera to a USB cable. If your PC doesn't
have a card reader, you can buy a USB card
reader for under $20. Zoombrowser treats the
cardreader just like a connected camera. I let it
automatically download new pictures from the
cardreader each time.
I like version 5 of Zoombrowser -- Canon has
really cleaned up their act.

Hi Don - I use BB Pro with my 20D and am very happy with it. In terms of
focus points, I checked and they show up for me with all the files, CR2,
JPEG shot directly in the camera and JPEGs converted from CR2 files. Of
note, the focus points are not turned on by default, it is a menu setting in
BB. Is it possible that the problem JPEGs have been converted or cycled
through another program that might be stripping some of the data from them?
I get the full EXIF data for all the camera images, including custom
function data. I don't get Subject Distance and looking at the raw EXIF
data, it doesn't appear my 20D is recording that info (maybe a setting I've
missed?).
In terms of the software itself, you have to determine your main uses for
it. I like the RAW conversions (which as people point out, uses the Canon
algorithms), but that is one of the less important functions for me. I
particularly like its IPTC support (especially the ability to batch label
photos), the ability to quickly proof copy & watermark images, create HTML
galleries, do side by side photo comparisons, batch renaming, etc.
Every program has its strengths and weaknesses. Unlike a program such as
Zoombrower or Thumbsplus, BB is not a database thumbnail program. But since
I don't actually want that "feature", BB serves me well (I switched to BB a
few years ago after my disappointments with Zoombrowser). I use BB in
conjunction with Photoshop CS (BB is not an editing program).

If you shoot RAW, try Capture One (www.phaseone.com). Pro version is
expensive, but LE version is less so. You can download a 30 day trial of
the Pro version. Which is good because it'll take you 15 to figure it
out. :-)

As always, lots to consider. Thanks for the info everyone.

I just use the EOSViewer and drag the folder to the PC and rename it with
the date.
The auto download on zoom browser is preferable though.
