Hi

I've seen many posts here about new FAST flat panels and I've done some research of my own. These are the 5 panels I found but I've only seen 2 mentioned here !

Check out....
Acer AL732 - http://www.acer.co.uk/vi/page74.js [...] 285211.htm
Benq FP767 - http://www.benq-eu.com/products/lc [...] ifications
Hitachi CML174 - No need for a link I think :)
Planar PX171M - http://www.planar.com/monitors/px171m.asp
ViewSonic VG170m - http://www.viewsonic.com/products/lcd_vg170m.htm

Anyone reading these forums knows plenty about the Hitatchi but does anybody know anything about these other models ?
I've been keeping an eye out now for a few weeks and nothing appears to be materialising :(

I'd also be VERY happy is someone could tell me of any UK suppliers who might stock these. The usual suspects (dabs etc) don't seem stock many listed here but then they might not be released yet
Most of them do list release dates in 1st quater 2003 though.

The common feature seems to be the brightness of 260cd/m2.
Seems like they're all using the same AU Optronics panel ??
Although some of them claim different contrast ratios and viewing angles.
You've probably in an earlier post that the Hitachi and Planar use the same panel, so that's certain I guess.

Reply to guru

Sure they seem to use the same panel but its the different features which appeal to me.

I particually like the aluminium Acer panel which would look very nice next to my Cooler Master 210 :)

So far I have found it on sale in denmark for around 550 euros which sound like a good deal. Mind you since I don't know the language I need to find it in the UK before I'd consider buying it.

On a final note there have been some posts about the Hitatchi panel not doing the full 16 million colors. Most of the other panels though do definately say they do 16 million colors so I'd rather not have the Hitatchi panel.

I've been looking at this Hitachi job for a couple of weeks now, and trying to decide whether i want to splash out on it or not.
Best price ive found in the UK is from NexNix ( www.nexnix.com ) who were advertising it for £345 + VAT which is £410-ish.
Never dealt with this company tho' so I have no idea what theyre like. Ive read some bad things about Dabs.com though so I would prefer to avoid them if possible. They are also offering the Hitachi but it works out as marginally more expensive.
Good luck!

Try Over Clockers UK. They are offering the Hitatchi at a very apealing £369 inc vat !

Try here.. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acat [...] s_112.html

I don't know how they are for returns but I've bought a very nice case from them with no problems.

i have had no problems with <A HREF="http://www.dabs" target="_new">http://www.dabs</A>. i been using the website for about 2 years and the mail oreder system before then. i get most of my stuff from them since they normaly have very good delivery times (2 days or less) and the prices are often good as well. other than them i use <A HREF="http://www.overclockers.co.uk" target="_new">http://www.overclockers.co.uk</A> since they some time have things dabs dont (533mhz rambus any one??) and they are just down the road. not always the cheepest and they dont have great stock levels. (again the rambus thing) but they arent bad. <A HREF="http://www.theoverclockingstore.com" target="_new">http://www.theoverclockingstore.com</A> is another good one.

Now thats what I want to know!

I have not seen much information regarding the NEC 1760NX models but the specs from NEC's website state a 16ms response time. 4up / 12down.

Anyone have more information on this model. I had decided to purchase a 172T but they are so hard to find up here in canada. The NEC 1760NX model seems very good only lacking pivot.

Where did you find information on the LCD1760NX pixel response time? NEC site simply says “16ms response time – typical” wonder what they mean by typical?

On the Nec/Mitsubishi european site, there is a PDF file with detailled specifications for the 1760NX with a response time of 16ms (4ms white to black and 12ms black to white)
<A HREF="http://www.nec-mitsubishi.com/coremedia/download.jsp/94432/LCD1760NX-datasheet-english.pdf" target="_new">http://www.nec-mitsubishi.com/coremedia/download.jsp/94432/LCD1760NX-datasheet-english.pdf</A>

I wonder how that would compare to a grey to grey time.

I read somewhere, maybe in this forum (sorry, no link) that the panel used by the Hitachi CML174 has a 16ms grey to grey response time. If true, this implies that the panel used by NEC is not the same as that of the Hitachi, and since Grey to grey times are significantly longer than white to black or black to white times, that the Hitachi has the superior response time.

Of course, the initial premise could be incorrect…

Anyone help me here?
Chris

Interesting...perhaps Gosharks would care to enlighten us. I know the LG Philips states 16 ms grey to grey response time, but then again they could be looking at a specific grey transition which takes less time than black to white....

Here are two more you can add to your list

LG L1710B
http://www.lgelectronics.co.uk/mod [...] ry_uid=643

CTX S730
http://www.ctxeurope.com/mainprodlcd.asp?model=s730

The LG model lists a response time of 20ms but on some German websites it specifies that it uses the same panel as the Hitachi

Great !

Unfortunately most of them still arn't on sale yet :(

Reply to oxoUK

nexnix now offering Hitachi for £310 + VAT (=£365).

That LG seems to state 20ms response on the posted link...has the spec changed?

In my earlier thread I mentioned that some German websites say the LG uses the same panel as the Hitachi unless the UK model uses a different LCD panel.

This product seems available to buy in the UK now so can anybody confirm the response time of this monitor.

Anyone heard anything more on the Acer AL732 specs or availability in the UK?

It's a sexy mutha.

Reply to arkus

I rang Acer(UK) last week and they didn't seem to have a clue about this model...the women on the other end came up with some story about the UK site being the European site so some models don't get released here

On a side note i just ordered the LG 17" which has a response time of 20ms should have it next week got for £350 which is a bargin i think, i will let everyone know how it goes!

Don't know that much about the ViewSonic VG170 but read a review of ViewSonic VG800 on anandtech.com and testers said that ViewSonic VG800 monitor "appeared dimmer and semmed to have a lower contrast ratio than advertised." See link below. Hope this helps.

I called Acer UK today and after a call back they said that the AL732 isn't available in the UK yet as it hasn't been released. The guy said to check back at the start of March :(

Maybe the english manual hasn't been written yet

Its amazing just how bad the uk gets a bung deal when it comes to electonics and stuff....half the time we dont get alot of products and when we do....boy oh boy how pricey they r.. (Hmmm its got a Sony stamp on it..lets bung a extra 200 quid on that TV)..Not to mention last on consoles...console game and more!
I read a very good review of the Cornea 17" TFT screen..very good price in dollors...can i get it over here??? can i hell!!!!!!!!!

As for the planar it doent even appear in a uk search engine..........

:-(

U guys in the US are lucky..u get a great choice of products and a good price as well.

Oh well at least we got a good football team....

DOH!!!!!

Reply to OLDSKOOL

Acer are a German company I believe, the screen was only just available there in the last two weeks. (A colleague just bought one)

In Switzerland, it is just hitting the shelves. The UK is not that far behind and plenty of products appear in the UK that don't appear in the US (Oh and don't forget the additional tax you'd pay on US product).

They seemed to have a better returns policy than wstore.

it's all very interesting!
my question is perhaps, how do we troubleshoot flat panels?
is it much easier than crt's?

Woohooo ! The Acer arrived today ! Early !!!

I've only had it out of the box so far (well packed it is too) but I'll try and find the time to post a review tonight after I bin the 15" doorstop I have now.

Just it time for the weekend too :)

Reply to oxoUK

Yup mine arrived today too!!!......so far so good havn got round to any games yet other then 3dmark 2001 which ran silky smooth.

Only thing i wasnt best pleased about was the lack of DVI cable...have to go with analog for now. But is it really worth gettin a DVI cable?, rang 3dsolutions guy was pretty helpful and said there isnt really much difference but i'm still undecided...

Reply to nips

Well, been using the Asus AL732 through the weekend and I'm very happy with it ! Also after a close inspection I've only found 1 dead pixel at the edge of the screen :)
The colours are great, it handles films with no problems at all and it looks very good to boot.

I have had a few disaponitments but nothing thats a big deal...
1 - Its not completely aluminium, just the face plate and the base. The case still looks very good though next to my aluminium case so I'm not really complaining as such.
2 - It is very bright and with say Word (white display) its too bright but I don't see any way of adjusting the temperature.
3 - I run two computers with a KVM switch box and I'm finding that sometimes it has a bit of trouble with switching between displays. Especially if the computer is rebooting it searches for input (across 4 types) but then gives up and powers down too quickly. Again, not a big deal and something I'll have to get used to.

The refresh rate is good but not perfect and if you for examply turn round quickly in Battle Field the screen does blur. Windows blur too when you drag them quickly but I guess bluring will still be noticable until (maybe) 4ms TFTs are out. However thats 6 months+ and I'm not waiting that long !

Finally it arrived well packed with cables for just about everything (except DVI :) including power cables for 3 countries ! Also some of the cables (D Sub & SVideo) were shielded, braided with a transparent cover like you'd expect to see with rounded IDE cables. I don't know if this is common now but it impressed me !

IMHO this is a top quality pannel that came in cheaper than the Hitatchi and I'd buy another if I could.

Hope this helps

I am Italian and I live in the UK.
I know now how bad the import and distribution of electronics is is this country, compared to Italy, Germany and the rest of Europe. Many users on some Italian forums have been using monitors such as the Acer or the samsung 172t for months...
Nevertheless, this is good news for you.
Italian customers are fully satisfied of the acer but few of them have been complaining about the exceptionally high number of dead pixels that this monitor could have, if compared to other quality monitors like the samsung. very often, the acer can also show some disturbing thin lines. I hope this is not your case.
Furthermore, there is an interesting trick you could use to save some money.
Apparently, ALL the customers that contacted ACER ITALIA to complain about the fact that the DVI cable was not included in the box, have been sent a brand new cable FREE. the cable is black/clear and suits a 45° angle plug.
try to do the same with the UK branch. it may work.
regards,
A.
p.s.: I guess I will go for the nec 1760nx...

Hi

Thanks for the advice but I've already purchased as DVI cable but havn't been using it. The image badly distorts when using the cable and looks a little like bad tv reception so I think the cable contacts need cleaning. I havn't got around to that yet though becase the analogue image is flawless and perfectly upto what I use it for.

I havn't noticed any lines in the screen though and the monitor gives a crisp, clean picture. As mentioned I do have 1 dead pixel so if this is usually a big problem maybe I got lucky.

Reply to oxoUK

Yes almus is correct. You can get a DVI cable from Acer. I know because I've got one from them. It is also listed as an included cable on their support site.

http://dehamnf1.acer-euro.com/app/ [...] ht=0,al732

I'm interested to find out the DVI quality on the AL732 as some people say there are problems with it, especially on ATI cards. Not sure if it is the problem you are experiencing but another DVI cable could help you troubleshoot your problem.
