I own a dell dimension 9100 and am currently looking for a cpu upgrade. My current hardware consists of: Intel Pentium D 2.8 GHz, Nvidia Geforce GT220, 4 GB RAM, and the pc's the 2005 model. I was wondering if this thing could run a quad core processor without changing the motherboard.

no it can not and upgrading the cpu in that unit since it can not even run a C2D is not worth it at all.
maybe not if you could run top end C2Q's but it can't.
depending on the RAM specs and maybe the GT220 (even tho I wouldn't want the GT220) might carry over to another build if not DDR3..
my suggestion to you is new build or more parts to buy..
