Slow Internet Suddenly

2 weeks ago, my internet had been running fine. I would do a speedtest to a constant server via I would always get 8Mbps & 105 ping. One day, I started getting 210 ping & under 4 Mpbs. I am using a Linksys router. I plugged directly into the modem & it didn't get any better. I have called twice now, and have been told since I ping fine in-network via trace routes & a speedtest through the company's website, that there is nothing they can do.

Here is a recent traceroute I ran:

1 2 ms 1 ms 2 ms
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 9 ms 8 ms 11 ms []
4 11 ms 14 ms 13 ms []

Anyone have any ideas? My ISP refuses to help.

  1. try a new router. the router can be getting old and having a hard time buffering the request.

if its not the router you can force your isp to give you a new modem by telling em your modem is broken, can fry it by sticking paper clip in it.. no i haven't done this ;)
  2. Well I called and told them about the bad hops. Today, it seems to be fixed, none of my hops to are over 90 now. But I still can't get better than 3Mpbs down, and still can only ping 180+ to most speedtest servers. I'm out of ideas now.

Connecting straight to the modem or using the router seems to make very little difference.
  3. ya i though it might be your router but if you directly connected and still same i would tell em your modem is dead. Tell em it keeps going in and out and when you call unplug your modem so they cant ping you. Hopefully they send you and new one and it will fix your problem.

    Best of luck
  4. Well there was real bad problems about a month ago with the internet dropping constantly. They came out and replaced tons of wires, etc, and replaced the modem as well. It has been running fine and then just one day it went like I mentioned above.
  5. Level3 is flaky, slow, and generally terrible. You can see that was the issue in the tracert. The person suggesting replacing YOUR router was way off.

I have a server hosted through Level3. Some of the country has pretty good bandwidth to it, but going through Level3s Dallas->San Diego hop is about as fast as connecting to a server in Tibet.

I do not believe Level3 cares. I recommend any provider switch to anyone else.
